Veronica

Here she is, finally... a good mix of a raccoon and Kelly Osborne, with hints of Wednesday Adams. Struggled a bit with this one; she didn't seem to have much charm, but a bit more make-up saved the day. I finished the face before I stumbled upon something very cool, and now I'm dying to make another little goth. I'm probably a bit slow, maybe the whole world knows about this already, but I've just discovered harajuku. It's Japanese kids dressing up like manga characters and gothic lolitas, who hang out in the Harajuku area in Tokyo. They really go over the top with make-up and clothes. Check out this flickr page for some really amazing photos. They also like carrying little dolls and teddies around... something to think about.

Also took a photo of my next doll, Muriel. Found the name brooch in an op shop, had to have it! I dyed her fabric with tea, Earl Grey to be exact, left over from the last annual tea party. Can't wait to get started on her, but I'm probably going to be a bit busy with other crafts for the next while.

Bags

Just finished these bags; they've been waiting patiently at the bottom of the sewing pile for weeks... Hoping to sell a couple at Craftwerk in August if I can get a stall, the other one's a Christmas present (I'm starting early this year). I've also been busy with my goth girl, she pretty much just needs shoes, so will be blogged soon.

Glass

Just got this amazing image of a new window my sister made. Wish I could have her here in NZ to be my personal glass artist...

Paint

I've had so much fun this morning; have been meaning to paint my dolls for a while now, and had all that creative energy left from yesterday. I've got no illusions: my style is naive to say the least, but I had a great time painting, with the Parlatones, Drugstore and Bic Runga at full blast in the background. I should do this more often... Here's Moya as a painting:

The dark side

I've had such a great day today, and am full of inspiration now. Went to visit Maya at G2 this morning; she's helping me with ideas of what to do with my dolls. She's full of them ideas; I always leave there with interesting links and new angles on how to market my dolls. Then went for a little walk down K Rd (for those not in Auckland, Karangahape Rd is full of secondhand clothing and sex shops, and most things in-between): finally bought the latest World Sweet World copy at Iko Iko, saw some very nice secondhand clothing all for under $20, and got sucked into the exotic darkness of Miss Illicit. That shop's got to be the coolest in the city. Also looked up an artist called Candice Tripp, who's got a delightfully dark view of the world. Here's my favourite one of her paintings, called 'Our horrible mistake'. I can feel a goth doll coming on...

It was possibly also an important day, in that I couriered a very nicely wrapped parcel containing New Matilda to a certain lady designer. Will blog if anything happens in that department.

New Matilda

Look at the massive difference a new hairstyle can make (although us girls have always known the power of a good haircut!). Here's new Matilda, looking more like a 21st Century girl who likes reading Clarice Bean, not the Secret Seven!

I finished her last night at craft group, and am very happy with the result. Now for her story: she's dressed in a Trelise Cooper (surprise surprise) dress, from her Kids Summer 08 collection. If I seem obsessed with Trelise, it's mostly because I share her love for trims and frills (for my dolls, not brave enough for that on my own clothes!), and also because her designs seem to work well on my dolls. Here's the original (2nd from right):

Matilda

In case it seems like I've been a bit idle, here's my latest doll, Matilda. I finished her yesterday, but I might work on her a bit more. Not completely happy with her hair; it's cute, but flops around a bit too much.

She likes crickets and butterflies, and reading Enid Blyton stories by torchlight. Her mum bought her a Very Expensive Dress, which she wears all the time. She's even got cool knickers to go with the dress.

She might appear again soon, with new hair...
